Aduro Aurum - Via Valde
The day is warm and bright, and Sri knows he -ought- to be sleeping: he's on the night shift for the next week or so. Still, he's not tired -now- and he can't bring himself to hole up in his room with such a lovely day out. Of course, the fact that a dumpling-vendor has taken up residence beneath his window is likely a part of what's keeping him away. Going to sleep is just a -little- more difficult with an orangutan hollering just below you. So he's settled for bartering for a few dumplings, nipping them out of the orangutan's hands. Now he simply wanders, cheerfully unaware of the fact that even off-duty he walks like a watchman, his stride steady, his gaze sweeping side-to-side, ears alert and tail up.
The Via Valde is never as crowded as the bazaar; most vendors wouldn't dream of setting up shop so close to the buildings here, aside from the ones trying to sell votives to worshippers. Still, a lot of traffic does pass through here, headed this way or that, and an ocelot running from the Viridis Arbor in a hurry nearly collides with Sri on her way through the gates. She yowls, skipping aside just in time, and then disappears into a gaggle of solemn pilgrims on their way into the temple, leaving in her wake a shrill, "Sorry!"
The entrance to the building is quite wide. Even so, as she blows past the maned wolf stationed just inside the archway, she's close enough to ruffle his fur. Hesito slowly turns his head to follow her movements, his eyes narrowed with idle contempt. He returns to scanning the crowd after a moment, and seems to find what he's looking for not long after--he steps out onto the street, his stride purposeful. "You there. Guard," he rasps, and there's no question who he's addressing--he's staring at Sri.
Sri calls out, "Stop!" automatically, just barely biting back an, 'in the name of the first phalanx!' He might not be on-duty officially, but what watchman really -ever- goes off-duty? He snorts, gives himself a shake: getting a jump-start on that shift already, is he?
He gazes after the ocelot, and in doing so his orangey eyes pass over the maned wolf. The elegant adornments the wolf wears give him pause, and Hesito's call doubly so. What? He looks around despite that direct gaze to see if there's another guard around, but it's just him. How does the wolf -know-? That his whole body language perhaps gives him away doesn't occur to him.
"Yes?" heading over as he speaks. The maned wolf is important-- the adornment, the way he speaks. Sri's own body language down grades to something much more subdued as he approaches.
The instant that Sri does start approaching him, Hesito brings his thin body to a stop and simply waits. The amount of jewellery he wears certainly is impressive; he seems to gleam under the sun, and those more well-acquainted with the rector give him a wide, respectful berth as they pass him by. "Are you patrolling? Well, no matter," he answers his own question, regarding the wolf sourly. "If you are, come back to it later. Your rector has a job for you."
Sri might not be well-acquainted but he knows that whoever this is he's -- well. Not someone to disrespect. He dips his long-muzzled head as he comes over, and indeed his entire posture pulls nearer the ground for a few moments. "Rector Hesito!" still, he's startled-- but-- of course, the rector. He crouches at once-- not on par with the display he might give royalty or his ductor (who after all he owes more -personal- allegience to)-- but close. And then easing to his paws again, straightening but his head's still low, his gaze politely indirect.
Hesito doesn't bat an eyelash; in fact, those eyes are still a little narrow. His body doesn't so much as quiver, but even so he's tense. The rector is impatient for something. "Yes," he says shortly. "Back on your feet. You'll need them.
"Find the ductor. I must speak with him regarding a matter of some importance. You know where he often is at this time of day, don't you?" It's an unfair expectation, that every one of Talis' guards should know where he is at all times, but from Hesito's expression it looks like he isn't prepared to take no for an answer.
In fact, Sri -doesn't-, but that's not the right answer and he knows it. "I'll find him and tell him at once," he replies. Who does he know who -might- no such a thing? He's not even sure where the ductor -lives-,a nd suspects that he's got an afternoon of walking the city ahead of him. "Shall I tell him where you'll be as well?"
"Good." Hesito turns away, and he doesn't look back when Sri keeps talking. "Tell him," he calls over his shoulder, "that I'll be awaiting him in my quarters. Akasha's blessings, child." And that's all. Off he goes again, back into the coolness of the temple--trusting, apparently, that the guard will keep his word even if nobody's watching him.
"Blessings and good fortune to you as well, Rector!" he's speaking to a retreating back, however. -- Certainly, Hesito likely has spies all over the city. Sri is quietly religious, on some level, although like many in the city that religion is as much superstition as anything, but he -does- know that the priests are more than merely humble servants of the Goddess. So in a sense, he -is- being watched. He turns, sighing heavily (and surely no-one can fault him for -that-, the prospect of running all over the city with greasy meat dumplings heavy in his stomach), and trots off along the street once more, heading for the first of a thousand likely haunts with his message.
